Our studio practise for the last couple of weeks has focused on Contact Improvisation. The team have been working with a wonderful guest artist David Corbet; falling, flying, catching, leading, following, lifting and finding rolling points of contact whilst building trust between our new ensemble.
Reduced to its simplest form, Contact Improvisation is an improvised movement encounter between two or more people. In this democratic dance there is no set choreography to replicate and anyone can initiate movement. This allows individuals to respond in the moment using basic principles of mutual support, physical listening, gravity, momentum and weight exchange.
It has been a joyful professional development opportunity and a chance to learn new skills and techniques to further inform the creative development of our next work.
Suggestion, invitation, improvisation and collaboration.
